AMATEUR cooks and bakers are being asked to share their favourite recipes to help celebrate the UK’s Older People’s Day 2011.

As part of the celebrations, residents are being asked to contribute to a cookery booklet featuring healthy recipes that have been passed down through the generations.

On Friday 9th September, Darlington Stroke Club handed in the "Save Our Stroke Unit" petition in to Councillor Bill Dixon and NHS County Durham and Darlington.

In the 3 weeks in which the petition had been running, we had managed to collection over 780 signitures. The petition was featured on the ITV news and in The Northern Echo, if you would like to read the article please click here.

The Stroke Unit in Darlington Memorial Hospital is in danger of being closed. Age UK Darlington and Darlington Stroke Club are campaigning to stop this from happening. This is a message from Darryl Moore who would like to create a pool of volunteers interested in manning the stands for promotional events.

Veronica Ridsdale was presented with the Volunteer of the Year Award by Chairman Ann Coppick at the KFA North East AGM held on 19^th March 2011 at Gilesgate Sports College and Sixth Form Centre, Durham.

Recently at the Trading Consortium Meeting, many Local Age UKs had questions on how they can get more involved in the Trading arm of Age UK, and through the introduction of prospective leads to our key commercial partner Handicare, also generate a revenue stream for themselves.

Bobble Day is part of Age UK's Spread the Warmth campaign. We want everyone to recognise the 250 older people who die every day during the winter months as a result of the cold weather and take steps to eradicate this issue.

NHS County Durham and Darlington is leading a formal consultation on the proposed changes to Older Persons Mental Health Services in Darlington and South Durham.

After conducting research that has found that older people in the North East of England may be more vulnerable to gas safety risks, Gas Safe Register, the UK’s official list of legal and qualified gas engineers, has launched a campaign throughout the region encouraging older people in the North East to be gas safe at home.

Sri Lanka recently experienced its heaviest rains in 30 years. It is estimated that 15,000 older people are in desperate need of help. 

Tens of thousands have been evacuated and many have been forced to flee wearing only the clothes in which they stood, leaving behind all belongings. Nearly 13,000 houses have been damaged or destroyed by the floods. To help with the real work of rebuilding, please donate today.
