“Rely on Me” Befriending Scheme
“I’m so lonely; I don’t see anybody week by week”
“I’d love to go out but I daren’t what if I fall?”
“Life isn’t the same since my husband died, we did everything together – and now well life just isn’t the same”
Imagine a world where nobody cared! Our scheme came about as a direct result of demand; more and more calls were being received by lonely isolated older people who - just wanted someone to talk to.
Our aim is to deliver a diverse and encompassing breadth of befriending offers which responds to the needs of the most disadvantaged population within the Borough of Darlington.
The primary objective of the scheme is to form a trusting relationship which in turn will reduce isolation and loneliness.
Our service is very simple we offer companionship on a weekly basis be it at home, in sheltered accommodation or in a care home, there are no boundaries. We also offer a driver service taking people shopping, to hospital and doctor appointments, to visit their loved ones who are now in care, or to visit us here at Age Concern to join one of our clubs or have lunch with one of our Befrienders.
One of our ladies actually left her home for the first time in three years “wonderful” she said as she journeyed to our building in Beaumont Street to join us for Sunday Lunch “it is so nice to eat with another human being and having so much company” “I have had a great day”.
Last year we started a gardening and small task team to work alongside our befriendees, gardens have been transformed and are now being used for the first time in many years. Locks have been fitted securing homes and thereby reducing fear.
One befriendee of 94 years said “my husband built a love seat for us it has been hidden under weeds for years it’s lovely to see it again, but best of all I can now get out of my back door”
If you would like to “make somebody’s day” or “need someone to talk to and share part of your day” contact us direct.
